Day 365 – A Year Later

Today (well, yesterday, but I was sick, so bear with me) marks the 365th (and final) day of this blog. It has been a trip! This has been a great experiment for me – trying to find the positive in every day. Some days were harder than others, but I managed it! I decided to look back over my year, and it’s been quite interesting to see what makes me tick. I present this chart:

Untitled

It was interesting to create this chart, and see what really makes me tick. Making healthy choices, eating, spending time with friends, being productive and doing theatre are the clear winners (which doesn’t surprise me!) Finding time to sleep and relax was something I felt victorious about, which means I maybe need to slow down a bit! Money and buying stuff didn’t rank very high, but becoming a grownup did. It was also interesting to see the ebb and flow of the year – being healthy only came in about June, as did Web Development, where as travel was mostly in April.

I started this adventure to see if I could get to a good place. This time last year I was really in despair – I felt really stuck and down, and so unsure of myself. Doing this everyday has helped me find focus, and find the positive. It also helped me make positive choices (sometimes I needed something to blog about!) It made me realise the things that make me happy, and encouraged me to do them more. This year saw me land a new job, quit smoking, and start a theatre company. It was the year I decided to go to the gym, work at the skating rink for the first time, and the year I turned 30! This was a year where I made a lot of friends, lost some along the way, and started to reconnect with family. I feel so much better for having done this, and would encourage anyone who reads this to do it to – even just in a journal for your own consumption. Finding the positive in every day has helped me get to the best place I’ve been at in a long loooooooooong time. I feel happy, focused, zen, and inspired.

So, I won’t be doing this blog every day anymore. This seems like a great place for it to end – it’s done it’s job, and I’ve done it for a whole year. However, I will be keeping the¬†positive spirit of it alive! I recently joined Tumblr, which is a sort of blog site where you can curate your own collection of things from all other the net, plus write stuff yourself. This is what I’ll be doing – my blog will be a mix of victories that I write, and stuff that makes me smile or inspires me! If you have Tumblr, you can follow me, or if you don’t, you can still read what I’ve posted by going to:¬†andraroston.tumblr.com.

Thanks to everyone who has read, supported, or featured in my blog over the past year – you guys are all amazing!

So…what was your victory?

Day 364 – On The Sofa

Today, I felt awful, so I stayed home from work. I spent the whole day on the sofa. This was facilitated by my amazing husband going above and beyond to take care of me, do the dishes, make dinner – everything. It was so great.

Day 363 – Productivity

Today, I was able to motivate myself to get some work done in advance! I normally wait until it is really needed before I get things done at work, but I had some “downtime” where I was waiting for emails back about things, and so took that time to get a head start! I was really proud of myself since I sometimes find that difficult to do – also, it was Monday!

Day 362 – Gender Stereotypes

Today, I had an amazing experience on the rink with a 5 year old boy called Aidan. He was struggling to get around the rink, so I decided to give him a bit of help and get him skating on his own. He took to it right away, and soon enough was zooming around having a ball. I told him (as I do must boys) that he could become a speed skater or a hockey player. He looked me straight in the eye and said “I’m going to be in Disney on Ice. I’m going to play Woody.” I LOVED that! I love the fact that he was so determined, and did not care that figure skating is not a traditionally male sport – he wants to play Woody. He then started telling me all about his gymnastics class. This boy made my day. Yes, women should be encouraged to do traditionally male things if they want to, but the reverse is also true. Thanks Aidan. I’ll come see you in the show in about 15 years.

Day 361 – Christmas Begins!

Today, I went back for my first day a the rink for this holiday season. I really enjoyed doing this job last year (despite the cold) and it was great to be back. I saw some familiar faces from last year, and met some really nice people. It looks like it’ll be a great Christmas season. Plus I survived all day, and wasn’t cripplingly sore by the end.

Day 360 – TV Catchup

Today, after doing some overtime at work, I was able to go home and finally catch up on all my favourite American TV shows. It was a much needed, relaxing Friday night – perfect before a big weekend!

Day 359 – Burger Time

Today, for the first time in three weeks, I ate a burger. I love burgers – but I have been trying to eat healthier, and haven’t eaten one for a long time. This victory is two-fold: it was delicious, and I was really able to appreciate the taste, but also it made me really full, so I know all my healthy eating is working!

Day 358 – Singing with New Friends

Today, I went out to karaoke with a bunch of people I didn’t know. I realise that sounds a bit silly, but I will explain. My singing teacher orgaised for a bunch of her students to get together – she does this every once and a while, but I had never been to one before. I had a great time, and met some cool new people! On top of that, I gave a really good rendition of a song I love, and felt super confident!

Day 357 – Sunday Roast on a Tuesday

Today, my lovely husband made a roast dinner – even though it isn’t Sunday! It took two hours to cook, but it was totally worth the wait. I am seriously lucky sometimes.

Day 356 – Act 2!

Today, we started rehearsing Act 2 – which is really exciting! I can’t believe we are there already. As a bonus, my actors are all fantastic, and have come such a long way in the couple of months we’ve been rehearsing.
